Kendall Jenner’s brand new Pepsi commercial is facing tons of mockery and outrage as people feel the ad appropriates the resistance and the Black Lives Matter movement. The soda ad sees Kendall doing a photoshoot in a doorway as a protest marches down the street, set to the tune of Skip Marley’s powerful “Lions” track. Kendall ultimately decides she wants to join the anti-Trump-like march and rips off her blonde wig before handing a cop a can of Pepsi as a peace offering.
The model approaching the police has been compared to the photo of protester Ieshia Evans approaching cops during a Black Lives Matter protest last year in Louisiana. However, Ieshia’s story ended much differently as she was arrested, while Kendall was not.
Fans on social media are outraged that Kendall is being portrayed as a protest icon with activist imagery unrepresentative of the actual political movement. In addition, people assert that Pepsi is blatantly trying to sell soda to young people influenced by the current political energy. Civil rights activist DeRay McKesson tweeted coyly, “If I had carried Pepsi I guess I never would’ve gotten arrested. Who knew?” While writer Taryn Finley tweeted, “Could you be any more blatant with the disrespect and appropriation of a movement, @pepsi? Is this a sick joke?!”
Pepsi has responded to the backlash in a statement defending their ad saying QUOTE, “This is a global ad that reflects people from different walks of life coming together in a spirit of harmony, and we think that’s an important message to convey.”
