They may seem like your average beer, fast food or dating website commercials, but underneath it all, these 5 ads went viral for the entirely wrong reasons.
Kendall Jenner made headlines this week after starring in a Pepsi commercial that was since pulled off the air after an online revolt due to its controversial nature. The interwebs targeted the ad when part of the commercial features the supermodel attempting to bring unity between cops and protests like the Black Lives Matter movement with a can of Pepsi…
Pepsi released a statement and an apology to Kendall after pulling the ad, saying QUOTE, “Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly, we missed the mark, and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are pulling the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position.”
Mary J. Blidge’s leaked Burger King commercial was the center of controversy in 2012 when she sang about the restaurant’s new crispy chicken snack wraps to the tune of her song "Don't Mind" after critics said it was racist against African-Americans.
Burger King quickly pulled the ad, and released an apology, but did not address the concerns in great detail. Blidge also issued her own apology, saying, “I want to apologize to everyone that was offended or thought that I would do something so disrespectful to our culture. I would never do anything like that purposefully. I thought I was doing something right. So forgive me.”
Switching gears to the topic of animal abuse... Internet domain website Go Daddy received its share of backlash, resulting in the company pulling the 2015 ad that was slated to air during the Super Bowl. The ad featured a lost puppy who was found by its owner, who then SELLS THE PUPPY via a website that was built on GoDaddy.com… HOLY. WATERWORKS.
Go Daddy? How ‘bout NO DADDY. Coca Cola was the center of another controversy after releasing its 2014 “America The Beautiful” ad that also aired during the Super Bowl. Many people complained about the commercial that featured people singing “America the Beautiful” in many different languages resulting in the hashtag #SpeakAmerican went viral on Twitter… #AWKWARD.
And finally, the nation believed Ashton Kutcher’s Popchips fake dating ad was one giant episode of PUNK’D, but lo and behold, it was not. The actor stirred up a wave of controversy when the ad showed him playing many different members of a fake dating site, including a Bollywood producer named Raj, in which he was criticized for wearing “brown face.”
Although the company released a statement following the controversy, the ad still exists on the Popchips YouTube page to this day… so let’s not pay a visit to the site and instead, I want to know which commercial you thought was the most controversial, so hit us up down here in the comments and be sure to subscribe.
