Almost all of KFCs 900 locations in the UK and Ireland were closed this back week due to a delivery problem with their chicken. That’s right, KFC, the fast food chain that sells chicken, ran out of chicken.
If this isn’t a sign of the apocalypse, frankly I don’t know what is.
The store closures sparked outrage from fans of the chain all over, with many taking to social media to air their complaints and devastation. One user tweeted QUOTE, “Disaster. Took the Grandkids out to dinner at KFC only to see that it's shut down. Some chicken shortage. Took them to McDonald's but it's not the same. Crying in the bathroom. Can't show weakness in front of them. #KFCCrisis.”
#KFCCrisis began trending on Twitter, as hundreds of stores remained closed all week. Some people even started calling their local police stations and politicians to complain about the crisis.
The company explained that the lack of chicken at hundreds of their location was the result of KFC recently switched to delivery service DHL. A KFC spokesperson explained QUOTE, “We’ve brought a new delivery partner on board, but they’ve had a couple of teething problems — getting fresh chicken out to 900 restaurants across the country is pretty complex!” And just when you think things couldn’t get worse, the delivery disaster also lead to a TON of food waste.
While it seemed that this was a crisis it would take KFC a LONG time to get out of, almost all of the locations are finally now open. But how would they avert such a terrible PR situation? By putting out the greatest apology ad we may have ever seen.
KFC took out a full-page apology in newspaper the Metro, ingeniously replacing their ‘KFC’ logo on a bucket of chicken with the letters rearranged to spell out ‘FCK’.
The advert read in part QUOTE, “A chicken shop without any chicken. It’s not ideal. Huge apologies to our customers, especially those who travelled out of their way to find we were closed...It’s been a hell of week, but we’re making progress, and every day more and more fresh chicken is being delivered to our restaurants. Thank you for bearing with us.”
Now THAT is how you win back your fans.
Twitter applauded the hilarious apology poster, with one user writing QUOTE, “Apology accepted @KFC_UKI ! Best apology ever !!”, AND another sharing QUOTE, “Hats off KFC. Brilliant, gutsy ad.”
