As if we didn’t all learn from Lady Gaga’s past wheel chair controversy, let me just fill you in: Wheel chairs are not to be used as actual chairs, photo shoot props OR sexual bondage aids. We all clear?
The bare butt and provocative fashion choices Kylie featured in Interview Mag were already enough to raise eyebrows, but readers have seemed to forget about the booty entirely (which is completely shocking to me) and focused all of their confusion and frustration on the gold wheelchair Kylie uses as a prop in many of the photos.
She is seen posing sitting in the wheelchair wearing a bondage-inspired one piece, looking almost doll-like, staring away from the camera, while raising her leg in another photo.
The backlash got to be so bad that Interview Magazine issued a statement to E! News saying, QUOTE, "At Interview, we are proud of our tradition of working with great artists and empowering them to realize their distinct and often bold visions. The Kylie Jenner cover by Steven Klein is a part of this tradition, placing Kylie in a variety of positions of power and control and exploring her image as an object of vast media scrutiny."
They finished their statement by saying, "Our intention was to create a powerful set of pictures that get people thinking about image and creative expression, including the set with the wheelchair. But our intention was certainly not to offend anyone."
And although the handicap prop has been the center of media controversy before, including Lady Gaga’s wheel chair performance and Nicki Minaj recently poking fun at a friend sitting in a wheel chair… It still struck a nerve with many Twitter users, one tweeting QUOTE, “@KylieJenner wow being in a wheelchair is so fun and fashionable! #Ableism is the ultimate fashion statement!”
Another user wrote, “As someone in a wheelchair @KylieJenner @InterviewMag, this is offensive. My chair is not haute couture.”
So guys, let’s just take this as a final lesson from Kylie and just don’t pose in a wheelchair…
