After a Spanish radio station accused Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui of not being Latin enough, the superstar struck back.
Our girl lLuren has always claimed and been proud of her Latina heritage. Even in her open letter to Donald Trump and his supporters last year, she wrote “I am a bisexual Cuban-American woman and I am so proud of it.”
A spanish radio station, however took issue with her claiming her Latin identity, writing on their website:
QUOTE: Many point [their fingers] at Bella Thorne or Lauren Jauregui as examples of stars who have jumped ‘on the bandwagon’ of what is trending, which is the Latin market. There are people who find that having a Latino relative doesn’t make you part of the community; that you are [a part of the community] when you were born in that country, you have defended your rights there and you may have even moved to the United States. Those who support this thought believe that if you weren’t born in the country, you can’t consider yourself Latina.”
And needless to say, she sure wasn’t pleased with that statement. As someone who hardly shies away from giving her opinion, Lauren clapped back at Happy FM with numerous tweets, saying in Spanish:
QUOTE: “An article based off of opinion. I feel Latina because I was born in a Latin family. I speak the language, I cook the food,” she tweeted. “I have been part of the Latino community in Miami since I was born; I have always had them around me. Anyone could tell you that.”
She went on to condemn the radio station for saying you had to be born somewhere to be truly a part of the culture, and to be allowed to claim it as your own. In another tweet, she added: “I know that when they see me, they see me as a little white girl that you cannot imagine being Latina. but NOBODY can tell me what MY roots are.”
It’s obvious to us that Lauren is proud member of the Latina community, and considers herself a Latin artist – as she stated clearly in an interview with Billboard Magazine earlier this year.
QUOTE I love South America. I'm Cuban, and every time I'm over there, I feel the genuine love. I'm moved by the way we're treated. I was raised with Latin culture, and I love it. She even added that she would love to collaborate in Spanish with Latin icons Shakira, Nicky Jam or J Balvin.
