So Madonna performed the Prince tribute at the Billboard Music Awards last night, but did she? The internet begged to differ.
When approaching a Prince tribute, there are inevitably going to be a lot of expectations because, hello it’s Prince and the reaction to Madonna’s performance proved that the world is not an easy crowd to please.
Rihanna dabbing may have been my favorite part. So sure the tribute wasn’t a high energy, split hitting performance but it was sentimental. She definitely looked the part dressed head to toe in Prince inspired regalia and kicked off the performance sitting epically in a bedazzled purple throne, so seeing that, people got excited. And then, well she sang “Nothing Compares 2 U” which yes was a song written by Prince, but was mainly made popular by Sinead O’Conner. But it was appropriate, the song literally says, nothing compares to you and Prince is in a league of his own. Stevie Wonder made an appearance, they sang Purple Rain, the audience swayed side to side in unison. It was beautiful! but some thought it was a tad underwhelming when you look at the bigger picture of how animated and vibrant Prince’s performances were. The internet had no mercy. Literally minutes after Madonna’s tribute aired, BET tweeted a promo for THEIR upcoming Prince tribute at the BET Awards that threw just a hint of shade saying QUOTE – “Yeah, we saw that. Don’t worry. We Got You.” And they weren’t the only ones. The disappointed Prince memes were alive and well on Twitter last night with one user tweeting QUOTE - “this is exactly why doves cry.” Before the show even aired, there was a petition started on Change.org signed by more than 8,000 people who didn’t feel that Madonna was a worthy performer to honor Prince. But Questlove came to Madonna’s defense saying QUOTE - “Every Prince rendition will not be a life changing orgasmic xperience. Just to SING his work is brave enough. Again feelings are on high, and EVERYBODY wants and deserves a chance to say goodbye in their own way. But remember: there will be AMAs, SoulTrain, NAACP, mtv, GRAMMYS, and a gazillion other tributes. But the point is let’s not get ugly with playing the ‘Prince would and wouldn’t approve’ game.”
So the performance may not have pleased the masses but at least Madonna was happy about it. She tweeted QUOTE – “An Epic Moment for Me to sing in honor of Prince with Stevie Wonder. #luckiestgirlintheworld.” But shortly after, she caught wind of the backlash and posted several posts on instagram basically shooing the haters saying QUOTE –“Deal with it. Anyone who wants to do a tribute to Prince is welcome to. Whatever your age Gender or skin Color. If you loved him and he inspired you then show it!!!! I love Prince 4 ever.” Then she posted a boomerang video with the caption – “This is my “I'm not your bitch don't hang your shit on me" Dance.”
