The 2018 BET Awards had a lot of memorable moments but the one moment that had everybody talking was when Meek Mill took the stage and debuted a new song, since he was released from prison in April. In case you didn’t know, in November of 2017 Meek Mill was sentenced to two to four years in prison when he violated his parole from a previous arrest when he was captured performing a wheelie on his motorcycle in an Instagram video. It was the third time Judge Brinkley sent Meek to prison for violating his probation. It was incarceration heard around the world because it sparked outrage many people deeming his imprisonment too severe. Mill ended up spending 5 months in jail before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered his release. The hip hop community stood behind Meek,
So as you can now imagine people got really emotional when he took the stage at the BET Awards. Meek performed a new song called “Stay Woke” that touched heavily upon mass incarceration and police brutality. And as if the song wasn’t emotional enough, the song also features Miguel who also joined him on stage. Meek sang lyrics around the stage while various scenarios were being acted out around him. A young girl drew on the sidewalk with chalk, a man and woman argued and a group of black men formed a crowd. Towards the end of the song actors portraying police officers ran on stage and then this happened:
The performance ended with the image of roughly a dozen people resembling prisoners standing behind bars. On top of that Meek Mill also paid tribute to XXXTentacion & Jimmy Wopo by bearing their faces on his shirt – two rappers who were both killed last week due to gun violence.
