Merriam-Webster ANNOUNCES Word Of The Year For 2017

The ballots are in, and one word has to win… and that word is FEMINISM. The year 2017 has undoubtedly put us all through the ringer, but besides the obvious, there have also been many positive things to come out of this year – the women’s march and the #MeToo movement to name a few, so it’s no surprise that lookups for the term “feminism” increased 70 percent over the past year on Merriam-Webster.com, and several times after key events, told by Peter Sokolowski, the company's editor at large, to The Associated Press.
And I just have to mention that I personally think this bit of info is super interesting which also came from Sokolowski, when he said that QUOTE, “No one word can ever encapsulate all the news, events, or stories of a given year,” Yet feminism, which beat out words like dotard, gaffe, and gyro, complicit and of course, covfefe among others — made headlines almost as much as trump, which was also recently named the Children’s Word of the Year by Oxford Dictionaries.
But I do have to point out that some of feminism’s newsworthiness was of Merriam-Webster’s own doings. Lookups for the meaning of feminism spiked in February, after White House adviser Kellyanne Conway outraged and confused many Americans during the Conservative Political Action Conference that QUOTE, “It’s difficult for me to call myself a feminist in the classic sense because it seems to be very anti-male, and it certainly is very pro-abortion.”
In response, the dictionary posted the definition of feminism to its Twitter account. Regardless, this just proves that even the smallest of strides have been made as this word is being talked about in an ongoing national conversation. BUT just to humor you a little, we’ve gotta give a shoutout to some of 2017’s fashion terms of the year – WOKE, POWER and STATEMENT topped the list as the global search and shopping platform analyzed over 30,000 online fashion editorial articles from 100 different outlets, to arrive at these results. “Woke” was most popular in the month of February after the election, when many were inspired by Hillary Clinton as well as the Women’s March to be, you know, WOKE, so there’s no doubt a theme of political conversation here.
So here’s to hoping words like “woke” are put to rest come 2018, but I’ve gotta say, I love how all these words are sparking political change and action being taken. Little victories, guys!
