Ryan Lochte is taking full responsibility for LochteGate, but not before shedding a few tears for the camera.
Not long after Ryan posted a ‘I’m kinda sorta sorry for what happened’ letter on Instagram, the decorated Olympian sat down with Matt Lauer in a one-on-one interview to apologize for the over-exaggerated story he told the world and his mother about the “robbery” that took place in Rio.
In his sit-down interview, Ryan remorsefully apologized and revealed that he and his teammates weren’t robbed. Instead, he said that he caused some damage at the gas station in Rio, refused to pay for it, had a gun pulled on him and his teammates by the station’s security guard, and then eventually gave the gas station money to pay for the damages.
The US swimmer also revealed that he was still intoxicated when he first told the story and lied to everyone on TV. Ryan told Matt QUOTE, “I was still under that influence, and I’m not making me being intoxicated an excuse. It was my fault, and I shouldn’t have done that.”
Ryan went on to tell Matt that he’s taking full responsibilities for his lies and all of the problems that occurred from his over-exaggerated story.
Although he apologized for his actions, that didn’t stop some of Ryan’s endorsers from dissolving their contracts with him. Early Monday morning, Speedo released a statement saying that they’re ending their relationship with the swimmer.
The statement reads QUOTE, “Speedo USA today announces the decision to end its sponsorship of Ryan Lochte. As part of this decision, Speedo USA will donate a $50,000 portion of Lochte’s fee to Save The Children, a global charity partner of Speedo USA’s parent company, for children in Brazil. While we have enjoyed a winning relationship with Ryan for over a decade and he has been an important member of the Speedo team, we cannot condone behavior that is counter to the values this brand has long stood for. We appreciate his many achievements and hope he moves forward and learns from this experience.”
Shortly after Speedy released their statement, Ryan issued his own statement in response to their announcement and said, “I respect Speedo’s decision and am grateful for the opportunities that our partnership has afforded me over the years. I am proud of the accomplishments that we have achieved together.”
While Ryan publicly touched on his situation with Speedo, he has yet to say anything about his situation with Ralph Lauren. Over the weekend, the clothing brand quietly removed the swimmer’s name and image from the Olympic endorser page on their website. Although this move doesn’t necessarily mean that the major clothing designer is dropping Ryan completely, their decision could change in the near future as they are QUOTE “working closely with the USOC” to review the situation at hand.
