Crime in Rio has been a big issue since the Summer Games started, and the latest event where Ryan Lochte and three other US swimmers were robbed at gunpoint has to be the biggest one yet.
While details on the robbery that went down was a little murky Sunday morning after it happened, Ryan eventually confirmed to NBC that the scary event did in fact happen to him and fellow swimmers Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, and Jimmy Feigen.
The whole thing happened when the swimmers were on their way back to the Olympic Village after a hospitality house hosted by France was over. Before they even made it back to the village, their taxi was stopped by quote “individuals posing as armed police officers.”
The Olympic medalist recalled the chilling event and told NBC QUOTE, “We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing just a police badge and they pulled us over. They pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground – they got down on the ground. I refused, I was like, we didn’t do anything wrong, so – I’m not getting down on the ground. And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, ‘Get down,’ and I put my hands up, I was like ‘whatever.’ He took our money, he took my wallet – he left my cell phone, he left my credentials.”
Yikes, that sounds like such a scary ordeal! Thankfully all of the people involved in that situation are doing just fine. Later that day, both Ryan and Gunnar took to Twitter to thank their friends and family for their support. Gunnar even joked that the gold medal is safe. Thank. God.
Do you think all of the Olympic athletes should just lay low until the games are over? Let me know all of your thoughts about this situation in the comment section below!
