There’s still an ongoing investigation happening surrounding Ryan and his teammates, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, and Jimmy Feigen. The swimmers claim that they were driving home Sunday morning when “their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athlete’s money and other personal belongings.” However, Rio police could not find any evidence to back things up, not the taxi driver or even any witnesses.
Plus, there are many inconsistencies between stories. Ryan first said that after being pulled over by a man with a police badge, a gun was cocked to his forehead forcing him to get on the ground. Then, during another interview, it was later said that the boys had stopped at a gas station to use the bathroom when the alleged robbery occurred and a gun was pointed in Ryan’s general direction.
Authorities say that none of the swimmers called police after the incident, officials only began investigating after seeing reports on social media where Ryan’s mother was discussing the robbery.
With all the rumors going around, a Brazilian Judge ordered Ryan and Jimmy’s passports seized, preventing them from leaving the country. However, by that point Ryan had already arrived home in the United States.
But now, just last night Jack and Gunnar were in their seats on a plane ready for takeoff back to the U.S., when they were removed and detained for questioning. An Olympic Committee spokesperson stated that the local authorities didn’t want to hold the swimmers long, but wanted to gain more information on what happened. The two were released overnight with the understanding that their discussions about the incident would continue today.
Hopefully setting things straight, just this morning ABC News obtained a video showing Ryan and his teammates breaking down a bathroom door and fighting security at a gas station around the time the alleged robbery happened.
Sooo, what does this mean? That the whole armed robbery of their taxi cab was made up and it was really just a fight with a security guard? I guess we will just have to wait and see.
Regardless of what is being said, Ryan is standing by his original claims. Saying “I wouldn’t make up a story like this nor would the others. As a matter of fact, we all feel it makes us look bad. We’re victims in this and we’re happy that we’re safe.”
Legal expert Troy Slaten told E! News, “if Ryan was convicted of making any materially false, ficticous, or fraudulent statements or representation to the FBI, then he faces up to five years in federal prison.” However, it was also mentioned that unless he wanted to fight it all the way, there would likely be a deal.
