12 time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte dove into some deep water with Brazilian authorities.. but lucky for him he’s already back here in the U.S.
Lochte and his teammates claim they were held at gunpoint and robbed in Rio De Janeiro by an unmarked car. According to the swimmers their money and wallets were stolen but cellphones and credentials were not. Prior to this confirmation there was a lot of confusion with conflicting reports whether the robbery actually did happen. Lochte’s mother told USA Today her son was indeed robbed but an Olympic Committee spokesman said the claims were “absolutely not true.” However later that day, the spokesman apologized and reversed his earlier statement. Lochte’s attorney told the associated Press Tuesday that there was quote “no question” the robbery happened and that the swimmer hired 24-hour security after the incident.
A Brazilian judge has ordered for immediate seizure of Lochte’s passport. Brazilian authorities issued this statement, “Judge Keyla Blanc De cnop, the Special Court of the Fan and Major Events, ordered the dispatch of search warrants and seizure of passports of American swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen." This is after Brazilian authorities claim there is no evidence supporting the robbery and that Lochte and Feigen’s stories of what happened don’t seem to match up. Ryan’s attorney made this statement, “"I’m shocked to hear that they would go to such measures in an effort to further investigate the incident as he has been nothing but cooperative with authorities, including sitting for a full interview with the Tourist Police, U.S. State Department, USOC Security, FBI, and anyone else that requested to be present." He also added that Ryan is safely back in the U.S. According to the DailyMail the Olympic swim team has left the Olympic Village but Feigen may still be in Brazil.
