Want to get involved?
1. Follow the @the_kai_ika_project on Instagram and Facebook learn tips on how to utilise fish heads, frames and wings in your own cooking.
2. If you’re a recreational fisher consider taking your fish to get filleted at the Kai Ika trailer located at Westhaven Marina. They’re open Thursday to Sunday.
3. Donate to the Kai Ika Project: https://kaiika.co.nz/donate/
Every so often we’ll be sharing videos about Food Disruptors- people, organisations, community groups and projects who are working to tackle problems and effect positive change in the food space. We have always wanted Chasing a Plate to be about more than us stuffing food into our gobs and sharing these stories is a way we can use our platform to showcase people and organisations who are doing incredible work within the community and whom we are huge fans of.
Since 2016 The Kai Ika Project have redistributed 140,000kgs of fish parts back into the community. Their mission is to:
“ ...
1. Minimise people’s impact on the marine environment. The Kai Ika Project helps address the reality that New Zealand’s fisheries are being depleted faster than they can rebuild.
2. Decrease waste going to landfill. Prevent tonnes of natural resource entering general waste streams by increasing the recovery of fish parts fit for consumption.
3. Generate meaningful employment. Through our new filleting trailer we are now generating employment opportunities. These work opportunities will allow others in our community to grow themselves, to provide for their families, and improve their food hygiene and handling experience.
4. Increase social, economic and cultural benefits. Foster community engagement and project support. Encourage community participation and celebrate cultural diversity through the distribution of this nutrient-rich food source.
5. Educate. Improve public awareness about the need to minimise waste and how we can collectively make a positive impact on our environment by adjusting our consumption behaviours.”...
A huge thank you to the whānau at Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae and LegaSea for allowing us to share The Kai Ika Project story in particular Lionel Hotene, Val Hotene, Carlos Hotene, Puna Hotene, Dallas Abel, Scott McIndoe, Quenton and Carl.

We’re Thomas and Sheena, food and travel fiends. We travel full time, hunting for the BEST local food in the world to showcase via our YouTube videos. Food is a window into a country's culture and one of the most exciting ways to get to know a place.
We're all about eating what and where the locals eat. You won't find food that's been created merely to be social media worthy on here- no rainbow bagels, gold leaf soft serves- just genuine, authentic food that tastes incredible.
From street food to mom and pop restaurants, we want to show you the best and most authentic food we find on our travels.
