From The Weeknd to her return to the spotlight, there was no topic that was off limits for Selener. In the latest issue of InStyle magazine, Selena got very candid about the pressures of social media, how she felt when she stepped back into the public eye at the American Music Awards, and of course, her sweet boyfriend, The Weeknd – who she also considers as one of her best friends.
Selena talked about her relationship and how important it is for her to stay true to herself instead of being heavily influenced by the person she’s dating. She said QUOTE, “I don’t depend on one area of my life to make me happy. It’s really important for me to love and nourish my friends and family and to make sure that I never get influenced by a guy. I’ve wanted to be in a strong head space for years, and I really wasn’t. Before, I was so young and easily influenced, and I’d feel insecure. You want someone to add to your life, not to complete you, if that makes sense. I’m lucky because he’s more of a best friend than anything else.”
Sounds like all is well in Abelena’s relationship, so all you naysayers and haters can suck it.
On top of getting candid about her dating life, Selena also opened up about that moment she returned to the spotlight at the American Music Awards after her 90 day break from the world. Stepping back into the public eye is hard enough after a somewhat long hiatus and for Selena making her return to a highly publicized event was very overwhelming, but she stayed strong for her fans.
Selena said QUOTE, “When I came out, I was asked to go to the American Music Awards, and everyone around me was like, ‘Do whatever makes you comfortable.’ I didn’t want my fans to have a negative view of taking care of yourself, so I just went in head-on, and I’ll tell you, the first time stepping on that carpet was so overwhelming. I felt like my back was sweating.”
After Selena’s return, she became very outspoken about the pressures of social media and how people – especially her young fans – shouldn’t focus on the number of likes they get or let it consume their life.
“Because of social media, because of all the pressure that girls have, it’s so difficult. It’s good to be connected, to see things, and to get a sense of what your friends are up to. But it also allows people to think they need to look or be a certain way… I had a choice to let it drive me crazy and tear me down or just allow myself to have real conversations with people. So I came to a place where it’s like, I have this platform, and I can still do what I love and connect to people who feel like they grew up with me. I won’t share things that I don’t want to.”
She makes some pretty good points. What did you guys think of Selena’s interview? Are you glad she’s finally being her own person and not letting her boyfriend influence her life?
