It’s easy to forget that Selena Gomez got her start on Barney & Friends, and followed that up with a hit show on the Disney Channel. While those are happy memories for us, it’s not exactly the same for Selena herself. In a new interview with Business of Fashion Selena opened up about negative memories from growing up in the spotlight. Selena first questioned fame when people started to give her attention for things other than her talent. SelGo admitted QUOTE, “I started getting known for things that weren’t [related to] my work. That’s when my passion started to really feel like it was going further and further away. And that scared me.”
Selena went on to say that as she got older she realized that certain people wanted certain things from her and it challenged her confidence. When asked what the turning point was Selena said QUOTE, “I remember just feeling really violated when I was younger, even just being on the beach. I was maybe 15 or 16 and people were taking pictures - photographers. I don’t think anyone really knew who I was. But I felt very violated and I didn’t like it or understand it, and that felt very weird because I was a young girl and they were grown men.”
We gotta say, Selena makes a lot of sense here. That would be difficult for any teen to cope with. Selena went on to reveal that at 18-years-old was when she felt “the flip” happen and she didn’t feel like her work was about her art. That also happened to be the same time when she first fell in love. And that’s when Selena’s love-hate relationship with the entertainment industry began.
In 2012 Selena took a break from making music and acting to focus on herself, “I stopped and then I continued, because I realized that I needed to challenge myself. Do I really love this? Is it worth it anymore?... As long as I’m healthy and happy in my mind, I’m all about it.”
Same. Here. A happy and healthy Selena is what we’re all about too! In the chat Selena also talked about mental health issues and how understanding it is the key to overcoming it. Once again, Selena appears to be wise beyond her years. Tell us below what you think of Selena feeling “violated” during her Disney days?
