When it was announced that Freeform’s Shadowhunters had been cancelled, the show’s audience reacted in the only way that the most loyal fans do… by launching a major #SaveShadowhunters campaign. And by major, we mean MAJOR. The trending hashtag has garnered over 10 million tweets, was spotted on billboards in Times Square in NYC and in Seoul, South Korea, and there are already talks to get advertising going in London. But perhaps the most impressive marketing move by FANS was the plane; yes an actual AIRPLANE, that flew over Netflix HQ in Los Angeles displaying the hashtag. As we know, the fandom has been urging Netflix to save the supernatural series that was axed last month. And yes, the producers behind Shadowhunters have seen all the love from the fans, and haven’t given up hope, so fans shouldn’t either just yet!
In an interview with Deadline, Shadowhunters producer, Martin Moszkowicz, said QUOTE “We’re amazed by the dedication and persistence of the incredible fandom of Shadowhunters and the #SaveShadowhunters campaign. We are in ongoing discussions with the network and Netflix to see how we can continue to bring Cassandra Claire’s vision to television.”
So while we wait to see if the show will be picked up by another network, fans can also hold on to the hope that there may be a chance to see your favorite Shadowhunters characters in another series. Moskowicz also revealed that the author behind the Shadowhunters book series might have another title on television soon, The Infernal Devices, and that could potentially allow for a Shadowhunters crossover.
Unfortunately, there are no for-sures just yet, and the show is still set to conclude after it’s 3rd season next year on Freeform, and on Netflix internationally. The show will also have a special 2 part series finale. But 2019 is still a while away, so here’s to hoping that somebody somewhere feels the love for the show and gives it a new home.
