Shawn Mendes finally addressed past racist tweets to his fans, but they’re not exactly buying his apology…
What’s up guys, it’s Sussan Mourad back here on Clevver News, and we were on such a roll with the good news lately, but unfortunately ya boy Shawn Mendes is in the dog house this week after fans called him out for having yet to address a slew of past racist tweets during a live Q&A, and I’m seriously sweating just thinking about the awkwardness of how it all went down.
So if you didn’t already know, well, now you do know that Shawn is one of many celebs who’ve been caught in the “past racist tweet” scandal that fans like to dig up because obviously what happens on the internet comes back to haunt you for dear life.
I’m not gonna dive deep into what the tweets actually said, but for a frame of reference, and I’m also going to say I feel very uncomfortable having to say these out loud, but in the interests of reporting to you guys, I’m gonna have to. They were along the lines of, “I can see the black coming out in you Lauren!” and a caption from a photo with a friend said, “A regular day with mah n-word Kareem.”
Yeah, I know, really not cool.
Fast forward to, like, this week when a fan took the opportunity to confront Shawn during a live Q&A before his show to ask about why he’s never addressed the crude tweets.
She said in a clip shared to social media QUOTE, “This is kind of a hard question. I don’t want you to take offence to it at all. I just kind of wanted to do it for black Twitter, black Shawn stans everywhere out there. In the past there were a lot of ignorant tweets, I guess I could say. Why has it never been acknowledged? Or why has there never been anything about it? We just want to know because we get a lot of hate for supporting you, knowing that this is your past.”
Anyone else getting nervous sweats here? No? Just me?
Thankfully Shawn responded, but once his “apology” hit the interwebs, fans were outraged at the sheer insensitivity… take a look:
He went on to explain that the tweets were crafted by his friends and QUOTE, “I had no idea I was going to have 50 million followers, which doesn’t make it any better. But um, yeah totally I apologize for everything insensitive I said in the past, but with that being said, yeah, I think that’s not my personality.”
Okkkaaayyy so a lot of people have questions, that had fans wondering, isn’t the cardinal rule of apologizing to take full responsibility?
Shawn said the tweets were crafted by his friends on HIS account, and not at all seen or done so by himself and then kind of wanted everyone to move on. Shawn’s response sent a lot of fans’ tempers straight through the roof with tweets rolling in. One fan wrote, “The fact that he refuses to take responsibility and blames it on ‘friends’ is incredibly immature and pathetic. Your actions are your fault, nobody else’s.”
Another tweet read, “a fan asks shawn mendes about his racist tweets and he responds with ‘move on’ i-”
Annnnd another had quite a few words to share, saying, “so why did i expect shawn mendes to know better than to begin his response to his past online racist fuckery w/ “i just think that, a lot of things need to be moved on from...” when he’s never addressed it? than go on to blame his friends for every single post made? lol yall..”
Man this did not end well.
Anyway, I gotta hear what you guys think about Shawn’s apology -- and is this something fans will be able to forgive him over? Share all your thoughts and opinions down below because I know you have ‘em.
