If you’ve ever been to a starbucks you’re probably pretty familiar with their classic –and plastic- green straws. Well it might be time to say goodbye to these straws, because the coffee chain has a new lid for iced drinks that eliminates the use of a straw all together!
More and more people are looking for ways to cut back on the amount of plastics they use in their everyday life. Obviously using your own reusable cups and straws are best – but if you ever find yourself out and about totally desperate for that midday pick-me-up, this new lid is an excellent solution.
Instead of the standard straw and lid combo that we've grown accustomed to seeing from Starbucks cold drinks, the Nitro Cold Brews come with a lid that has a hole on the top edge, similar to a wide-mouth can of Mountain Dew.
The reason the nitro cold brews are served with this specific lid, is that if you were to use a straw, you would bypass all of the delicious foam. When Starbucks rolled out Nitro Cold Brew in 2016, the company suggested customers drink it without a lid or a straw but if you wanted to take your brew on the road these lids were the perfect solution.
Well it turns out that these lids aren’t actually exclusive to the nitro cold brew. Customers have loved the straw-less lid so much that they’ve begun asking their baristas to put the lid on any cold drink they order!
In fact, people all over social media are totally on board with these lids
@_princesssjay shared their excitement on twitter writing QUOTE,

While @ellie_h13 on twitter said QUOTE,
@Starbucks are strawless lids going to be available for every drink? They are genius and so good for this earth!
According to foodbeast.com the U.S. uses about an average of 500 million straws a day, and it’s become such a global problem that Restaurants all over are leaning towards phasing out the use of plastic straws. In fact, all McDonalds in the UK will be replacing their plastic straws with paper ones.
While this is just a small step for now, Starbucks does have a bigger plan to eliminate the use of plastic cups entirely in the future. According to prnewswire.com the coffee giant has a plan to address its plastic pollution in 5 different ways – but the most notable will be the creation of a 100% recyclable paper cup without a plastic lining.
So if you’re not a fan of the plastic green straw – ask for a sippy cup lid! The earth will thank you!
