Along with the arrival of Reputation, Taylor Swift released two magazines that feature a variety of memorabilia including a poem that details reasons why she disappeared from the spotlight.
People say a picture speaks a thousand words, but in this case a poem is doing all the talking.
It’s no secret that following the major success of 1989, Taylor Swift straight up disappeared from the spotlight following the very public and somewhat embarrassing showdown with Kim K and Kanye. But now she has made her return with Reputation and along with it, Taylor released two magazines in collaboration with Target that are filled with artwork, photos, handwritten lyrics, and poetry. And there’s one poem in particular that seems to explicitly detail reasons why Taylor decided to retreat from the spotlight.
The poem is called “Why She Disappeared” and in it, she writes some pretty powerful lines about the emotional journey she went through after being dragged in the media. At one point in the poem, she echoes criticisms the media put out about her saying QUOTE – “Your kindness is fake. Your pain is manipulative.” The poem goes on to say – “When she lay there on the ground, she dreamed of time machine and revenge and a love that was really something, not just the idea of something. When she finally rose, she rose slowly, Avoiding old haunts and sidestepping shiny pennies, Wary of phone calls and promises, Charmers, dandies and get-love-quick-schemes.” Although she chronicles her struggles, the poem ends triumphantly saying – “When she turned to go home, She heard the echoes of new words, “May your heat remain breakable, But never by the same hand twice,” without your past you could never have arrived—so wondrously and brutally, By design or some violent, exquisite happenstance…here.” And in the death of her reputation, She felt truly alive.”
Now it is a poem, so there are of course several different ways to interpret it, so Taylor may not even be the intended subject of the poem, but I have a feeling she pulled from personal experience. What do you guys think about that poem? Do you think she’s the subject?
