The Weeknd debuted “Starboy” featuring Daft Punk last week and fans were so excited for the video to come out that it earned an MTVEMA nomination for best video before it was even released. And the anticipation was warranted because it is indeed a win. In the music video we see the Weeknd shed his former image by literally suffocating the old Weeknd so that the new and improved Weeknd can rise. Take a look:
We then see the Weeknd 2.0 smash his old records, awards, and wardrobe to symbolize that his former image is gone and a new era of The Weeknd has begun. The video ends with him riding off in into the distance with a black panther by his side. The video was directed by Grant Singer who has directed many of the Weeknd’s past projects including The Hills, Tell Your Friends, and Can’t Feel My Face. And Starboy has already proven to be a hit! The single wracked in over 17 million streams globally from last Thursday to Sunday which marks a new record for the most release weekend streams ever. Not to mention it is the one week most added record of all time in North America which many are projecting that the his upcoming album, also titled Starboy, will become one of the biggest albums of 2016. The album drops November 25th and he will be performing as the musical guest on Saturday night live on October 1st hosted by Margot Robbie. Exciting stuff you guys!
