We start our day of food hunting with soto- an Indonesian soup filled with grilled beef. We eat at Sinar Pagi, a local institution famous for its soto which is spicy, flavoursome and perfect spooned over white rice!

Next up we head for a must eat dish in Medan- bihun bebek or duck vermicelli. We visit Bihun Bebek Akien which is hidden down a small alley and set up in a family home. A rich bowl of duck soup which is almost medicinal in its flavour is served alongside vermicelli, poached duck and prawn balls. Simple but full of flavour.

Onwards to our next stop- sate padang! This sate is unlike any we’ve ever eaten- the meat is sliced very thin and smothered in a thick curry gravy. It tastes akin to a roast meat dinner! On the table are some cassava chips and fried beef skin which we empty into a bowl and ask the staff to pour some sate gravy over- chips and gravy Medan style!

It’s time for sweets next so we stop for some martabak piring- local pancakes/crumpets which are cooked over charcoal in plates. We sample the chocolate sprinkled martabak as well as the chocolate cheese martabak- rich, sweet and perfect for the sweet lovers!

We finish with TST which stands for Teh, Susu, Telur or Tea, Milk, Egg. This VERY sweet concoction is thick and creamy but perhaps a touch too sweet for our taste- great to try a local favourite though!
