Viola Davis takes home the award for best supporting actress at The 2017 Oscars.
Viola is making history this award show season.
Up against some stiff competition, Viola won her FIRST Oscar up against Octavia Spencer for her work in Hidden Figures, Naomie Harris for Moonlight, Nicole Kidman for her work in Lion and four-time nominee Michelle Williams for Manchester by the Sea. Being recognized of course for her work in Fences alongside Denzel Washington Viola didn’t leave a dry eye in the house when it came to her speech.
She then said: "Here's to August Wilson who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people."
Davis won for her portrayal of a mother determined to hold her family together despite the rages of her husband. The Oscar win comes in a role that Davis previously won a Tony Award for when she starred opposite Washington in a Broadway revival of "Fences," and the film is the first big-screen adaptation of an August Wilson play.
Davis emerged as the contender to beat, as this season alone, her awards include an NAACP Image Award, a BAFTA Award, a Critics Choice Award, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Davis made history earlier this year by becoming the first African-American woman nominated for three Academy Awards. She was previously nominated for her roles in "The Help" (2011) and "Doubt" (2008).
