The Stranger Things creators reveal two MAIN characters were supposed to be KILLED OFF in season 1.
We are SO glad they did not stick to the plan.
In their new companion book to Stranger Things, called ‘Stranger Things: Worlds Turned Upside Down’, the Duffer Brothers reveal behind the scenes secrets from their hit Netflix show that NO ONE could have predicted. Like, for example, the fact that BOTH Eleven AND Steve Harrington were supposed to be killed off by the end of the first season.
In the book, co-creator and director Ross Duffer explains that originally, their plan was to have Eleven QUOTE “sacrifice herself in order to save the day. That was always the end game.” While that definitely sounds like something Eleven would do, and she still might at some point, the guys were smart enough to realize that Stranger Things IS Eleven, so any season 2 plans wouldn’t really make sense without her. Ross further explains QUOTE, “Once we realized that the show was potentially going to go on longer than one season, we needed to leave it more up in the air, because deep down we knew the show just wouldn’t really work without Eleven.” He goes on to express that not only was Eleven crucial to the show -- so was newcomer Millie Bobby Brown’s performance. He says QUOTE, “...at that point, we knew how special Millie was. If there was going to be more Stranger Things, Eleven had to come back.”
We agree, so nice job, Duffer Brothers. Now, as far as Steve’s storyline is concerned, it actually makes a little more sense plot-wise that his character WOULD be killed of in season one. I mean, he was a pretty huge jerk to Nancy, and at one point we wouldn’t have been TOO upset with seeing karma hit him with a whopping dose of that Upside Down experience. Even The Duffers say QUOTE, “This Steve character, he was just supposed to be this giant douchebag.” But, once again, the Duffers saw more potential in Steve’s story arc, thanks to actor Joe Keery’s charismatic and sympathetic portrayal of Nancy’s bae. Fans also loved Joe’s portrayal of the character - and his hair - so that also helped keep him on the show in season 2.
One other character who DOES die in season 2, is Joyce’s boyfriend Bob Newby, played by Sean Astin. While Bob meets a horrific fate at the end of the season, according to the Duffer’s, Sean’s amazing portrayal of the character convinced them that they needed Bob to stick around for a few more episodes than was originally planned, before his tragic end.
The co-directors explain in their book QUOTE, “Sean Astin proved so likable that Bob’s death got pushed from episode four to episode eight because we kept wanting to keep him alive...It was important to us and also to Sean to give him a bit of a hero’s death. We wanted him to accomplish something meaningful.”
And that, he did.
So, moral of the story for any actor cast on Stranger Things who does NOT want to be killed off -- be incredibly likable and talented, and you’ll survive for much longer than your character intended.
