It’s safe to say that everyone has seen at least one episode of Stranger Things in their lifetime. The hit Netflix show aired in 2016 and the stars have been in the spotlight ever since. We can’t think too hard about the fact that we may not know Millie Bobby Brown or Finn Wolfhard if it wasn’t for the show.
One reason why audiences are so attracted to the show is because of the unique storyline that evokes nostalgia, not to mention the perfect amount of jump scares and suspense. Ross and Matt Duffer, brothers who created and write and direct the show, have become super well-known for their creation but one person isn’t too happy with them.
Last month, the Duffer Brothers were hit with a lawsuit from filmmaker Charlie Kessler who accuses the brothers of stealing idea for their Netflix show. Charlie claims that in 2012 he premiered a short film titled Montauk that he later pitched to the Duffers in 2014 at a Tribeca Film Festival part. Apparently Charlie wanted to collab with the brothers on a series called The Montauk Project and he even later QUOTE “presented materials” to their reps.
This was all good and fine until 2015 when the Duffer brothers sold their show now known as Stranger Things under the original title Montauk. Kinda sketchy, right? Well Charlie thought so too, especially because of the similarities between his original film and the concepts behind Stranger Things like having a young boy who disappears, a cop with a haunted past, mysterious conspiracy theories about a nearby military base that’s conducting secret experiments on children, and a monster that’s created by a portal to another dimension.
Charlie is currently demanding both monetary damages and a jury trial, but the Duffer brothers aren’t having it. Their attorney, Alex Kohner, issued a statement yesterday saying QUOTE “Mr. Kessler’s claim is completely meritless. He had no connection to the creation or development of Stranger Things. The Duffer Brothers have neither seen Mr. Kessler’s short film nor discussed any project with him. This is just an attempt to profit from other people’s creativity and hard work.”
We don’t really know what to believe but we do know that we’re curious to see how this all pans out.
Do you think that the Duffer brothers copied this idea or is Charlie trying to profit off of the Stranger Things success? Let us know what you think in the comments below and then click here to see our latest episode of Get Jacked! I’m Emile Ennis Jr. thanks for tuning in.
