Stranger Things Creators SUED For Ripping Off Show Plot

I guess when you’re good, you’re a target. Stranger Things is starting to taste its fair share of real-life drama. The latest involves the creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, being accused of ripping off the Stranger Things plot from a short film. A filmmaker named Charlie Kessler is taking the creators to court for allegedly copying his short film called Montauk, which premiered in 2012 and won an award at the Hamptons International Film Fest. He claims they used his script, idea, story, and film to make the Netflix series. The Montauk short film involves top secret government experiments- kiiiiinda like what we’ve seen in Stranger Things.
Charlie says he pitched this short film concept to the Duffer’s in 2014 with the idea of turning it into a full length series. But according to TMZ Charlie thought: “the idea seemed to die right there.” So you can imagine his shock when Stranger Things appeared on Netflix. And there’s more. In 2015 when Netflix announced the new project in a press release it held the title Montauk, and of course that later evolved into Stranger Things. Yup, we’re gonna go ahead and say the Duffer’s have a problem on their hands now.
Charlie is seeking monetary compensation and “destruction of all materials that were allegedly ripped off from his concept.” No word from the Duffers about this yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you guys updated.
