Nicki Minaj is being slapped with another lawsuit, but this time it has to do with one of her unreleased tracks.
Another day, another lawsuit. Just weeks after it was reported that Nicki was being sued by a former stylist of hers, Nicki has been hit with yet ANOTHER lawsuit and this time, it’s a musical fight.
The court documents, which were obtained by The Blast, revealed that singer Tracy Chapman is suing Nicki for copyright infringement -- get this -- over a song that Nicki ended up scrapping from her ‘Queen’ album.
So, over the summer Nicki had opened up about some issues she faced regarding the release of ‘Queen’ -- one of which involved clearing the usage of Tracy’s song ‘Baby Can I Hold You’ on her track, ‘Sorry,’ with Nas. Ultimately Nicki left the song off of ‘Queen’ after she had failed to get Tracy’s approval on the track.
Although it seemed like the problem was solved after Nicki took it off of her album, it was actually all far from over and that brings us back to the court documents that Tracy filed! According to these documents, Tracy is claiming that the unauthorized song is making the rounds on the radio and the interwebs after Nicki supposedly leaked it to Funkmaster Flex.
Tracy also claimed in the legal documents that Nicki’s team reached out for permission to use the sample. Rolling Stone reported that in these documents, Tracy alleges that her team QUOTE, “repeatedly denied Maraj’s after-the-fact requests to use the composition.”
After the repeated rejections, Nicki’s team reached out to Tracy’s team once again to reveal that Nicki was QUOTE, “inspired” by Tracy and wanted to speak with her to discuss the issue personally. Well, we all know how that ended.
Anyway, Tracy is suing Nicki for copyright infringement due to the leak and according to The Blast, she is also seeking an injunction barring Nicki from using the song again as well as unspecified damages.
