Zayn Malik takes the cover of Elle Magazine to open up about his insecurities and the anxiety he felt when breaking away from One Direction.
Zayn makes dating a supermodel and having a solo career look easy, but even he admits to still struggling with self-confidence.
During an interview for ELLE U.K.’s September issue, Zayn explained that when deciding to leave the band, One Direction, he didn’t feel brave. He actually mentioned not feeling fully secure in anything and always striving towards something better.
Saying quote, “It’s why I think sometimes I come across the wrong way, a bit distant. I’m just stressed out trying to control how I’m perceived.”
Zayn told the mag that within the last year, his entire life has changed and he’s still trying to take it all in. He even admitted that after establishing his solo career, he realized how in love with music he still was. Talking about his album, “Mind of Mine” Zayn said, “It was a buildup of six years, never being able to express what I wanted to say. I had something to get off my chest.”
Zayn also went on to talk about how cool it is that he doesn’t have to think about what anyone else wants him to do, and now has the freedom to wear whatever he wants. Referencing his pretty creative Met Gala look, Zayn said, “I can say I want to wear metal arms and it’ll happen.”
But when it comes to performing on stage, that’s another story. Back in June, Zayn cancelled his set at London’s Capital Summertime Ball and tweeted out to fans that with the magnitude of the event, he suffered the worst anxiety of his career.
Zayn admitted that he owed his fans an explanation, and that’s the only reason he decided to use his Twitter account. Saying, “As much as social networking is a big thing now, there’s something to be said about having something real, if I had a choice I would take the camera off everyone’s iPhone and make sure we didn’t have Twitter or Facebook. It affects art form.” He even said that he only uses his phone for calls because there’s something to be said about living in the moment.
And thankfully, he’s got a pretty great support system to keep him grounded. Talking about Gigi, Zayn said she’s super intelligent. Plus, they do the same type of job, so that’s why it works so well. But besides his girlfriend, Zayn also gave a shout out to his mom and three sisters telling the mag he has a lot of respect for women because of them.
He even joked, “When I go back to Bradford they treat me exactly the same. It’s why I only ever go back for a few days, otherwise they have me taking out the bins.”
