Orussey Market is one of the best and most local markets in Phnom Penh, and for any food lover, or shopping lover, it should be high on your list of places to go when you’re in Phnom Penh. There are other markets like Central Market and Russian Market, but Orussey Market tops them all.

One morning we headed off on a Cambodian street food tour of Orussey Market. I first wanted to explore the outside area of the market. One of the most popular stall we came across was actually serving pho, famous as a Vietnamese noodle soup. The crowd eating there and the aroma of the broth forced us into sitting down to have a bowl and it didn’t disappoint. The beef pho was excellent, one of the best bowls I’ve had in a very long time. Pho - 8,000 KHR ($1.93) per bowl

Inside Orussey Market you will find just about everything in Cambodia that you can think of, from clothes to food to accessories, it’s all in the market somewhere. We headed to the food court area, but there wasn’t a lot going on, so we decided to just have a cup of iced coffee.

My hopes for lunch were on a Khmer rice and curry feast, and so we kept walking around the market, until we stumbled into a prepared curry dishes stall that had an amazing array of different Cambodian dishes. It was a love at first street food kind of place.

We proceeded to order a huge Cambodian street food curry feast and it was one of the best Khmer meals I’ve ever had. I can’t even begin to tell you the names of all the different dishes, but the prahok, a paste made with fermented fish sauce, was excellent. Total price for entire Khmer curry meal - 50,000 KHR ($12.09)

On the outside of Orussey Market you’ll find lots of Cambodian street food snacks. I was pretty full honestly after that curry meal, so I just had a bag of candied and pickled bright colorful fruits. They were topped in a sugary chili salty coating, and though a little sweet for me, they were pretty awesome. Fruit bag - 3,000 KHR ($0.73)

If you’re a food lover in Phnom Penh, take a trip to Orussey Market for some amazing local Cambodian food and culture!
