Mary Tyler Moore passed away yesterday at the age of 80. She rose to fame in the 60s on The Dick Van Dyke Show and later shattered the glass ceiling for women in television as the star of her own show. The seven time Emmy winner had a great impact on women all around the world and so upon her passing, there was an outpour of love.
Mary’s Thoroughly Modern Millie co-star, Julie Andrews wrote– “Whenever we bumped into each other, people must have thought us nuts…screaming across some shopping aisle in a supermarket or yelling to each other down the corridors of CBS…’Millie! Miss Dorothy!' She was a joy to work with, her talent was monumental. She was brave, kind, generous and an activist for many causes. I will miss my ‘Miss Dorothy’ so much, but I’m comforted to know that the joy she brought us all will be everpresent in her many films and television shows.”
Larry King wrote – “#MaryTylerMoore was a dear friend and a truly great person. A fighter. Rest in peace, MTM.” Viola Davis said - “Thanks for the first real image of a woman being independent, funny & vulnerable. Thank you for changing the face of TV, #MaryTylerMoore!” Andy Cohen said – “RIP beautiful, upbeat, shining, glorious, wonderful, iconic Mary Tyler Moore.” Ellen paid her respects saying – “Mary Tyler Moore changed the world for all women. I send my love to her family.” Kris Jenner wrote – “A true beauty, a screen legend and pioneer for women, you will be so greatly missed, Mary Tyler Moore. Thank you for the laughter and the light you brought to us all through the years.” Britney Spears said – “So strong, so courageous and so beautiful. Rest In Peace, Mary Tyler Moore.” Ashley Tisdale wrote – “You paved the way. #MaryTylerMoore #rip” Mindy Kahling called Mary hilarious, beautiful, and relatable, while Ryan Seacrest kept it short but sincere simply saying – “Thank YOU, Mary.” Mary’s former co-star Dick Van Dyke pinned a letter saying QUOTE – “She was just the best. Outside of her family, I don't think there was anyone more proud of her than I was. Just to watch her grow was such a thrill for me. She left an imprint on television comedy."
Oprah Winfrey was a huge Mary Tyler Moore fan and has said many times that Mary was one of her biggest inspirations growing up. In 1997 Oprah dedicated an entire episode of her show to Mary and just as she was signing off, she got the biggest surprise of her life.
Hours after Mary’s death Oprah tweeted a picture of the epic moment saying QUOTE - “Even now looking at this picture I want to cry. I still can’t believe Mary Tyler Moore touched my face. Will love her 4 ever.”
