Despite Donald Trump tweeting last year that he would fight for the LGBT community, it appears he’s gone back on that entirely.
In a series of tweets the president announced QUOTE, “the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military …… cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you”
And immediately twitter went into a frenzy with stars tweeting their disdain for this decision.
Demi Lovato tweeted, “I just want to tell the transgender community that I love you and you ARE supported no matter what. #ProtectTransTroops”
Ellen Degeneres said, “We should be grateful to the people who wish to serve, not turn our backs on them. Banning transgender people is hurtful, baseless and wrong”
Ava DuVernay threw it back to his first tweet and said, “I guess he doesn't know what the "T" stands for.”
Troye Sivan posted a screengrab of a financial report on the military and said, “From a report commissioned by the pentagon last year. Let's not tolerate blatant transphobia under the guise of some huge 'financial burden'”
James Corden quote retweeted Ivanka Trump’s tweet regarding her support of the LGBTQ community and said, “Hey Ivanka, James here. Hope all is good, quick question, can you... Erm... Call your dad and have a talk. X
Caitlin Jenner also responded to the news on twitter after receiving a lot of backlash because she previously supported Donald Trump. QUOTE, “There are 15,000 patriotic transgender Americans in the US military fighting for all of us. What happened to your promise to fight for them?”
Miley Cyrus took to instagram and tweeted this photo with the caption, “I am heart broken today ..... please don't erase our progress! We've come so far! For our transgender friends who need someone to talk to , don't hesitate to reach out to @translifeline !”
(
And Laverne Cox released a statement to Entertainment Weekly regarding the tweets QUOTE, “I have met many transgender Americans over the years who have served or are currently serving our country in the military. I have heard from them humiliating stories of being misgendered and experiencing various kinds of mistreatment when they are willing to put their lives on the line in ways many of us would never do including our current President. This latest reversal of another Obama administration policy continues to send the message to trans Americans that our lives, our safety and service are less valuable and unwanted in this country, the country I love and hold so dear.”
