Who’s to say celebrities aren’t allowed to have an opinion about the man who is now the leader of the free world?
Celebrities speaking out against injustices in the world isn’t necessarily a new movement, but ever since Meryl Streep used her platform at the Golden Globes to speak out against President Donald Trump, her peers have decided to do the same. What many thought was going to be a night celebrating actors and actresses alike turned out to be just that, but with short Trump roast sessions sprinkled into the mix.
Whether it was about the immigration ban that went into effect over the weekend or just the President himself, everybody who was anybody had something to say about Trump. Ashton Kutcher kicked off the night by being vocal about his feelings on the immigration ban.
Julia Louis Dreyfus also spoke out against the immigration ban when she went up on stage to accept her award. Though there was a moment in her speech where she made fun of the President by saying that the award is legitimate and that she won, the actress put all jokes aside before admitting that she herself is the daughter of an immigrant.
Another winner of the night, Mahershala Ali, also spoke out against the immigration ban after accepting his award. The actor spoke about how important it is for everyone to embrace their differences and to lift one another up.
The cast of Orange is the New Black also made it clear to those who are listening that they all stand by immigrants. Taylor Schilling spoke on behalf of her cast members when she made this powerful statement.
Although many of the Trump mentions were critical of the President’s latest actions, there was one person who actually thanked Trump in their acceptance speech. But before you get your panties in a bunch and start sending William H. Macy some hateful messages on Twitter – because we all know that’s the thing to do these days -- the actor actually said this.
Meanwhile, Sarah Paulson asked her fellow actors and those who were watching the show at home to donate to the ACLU to QUOTE, “protect the rights and liberties of people across this country.” For those of you who don’t know, the American Civil Liberties Union is challenging Trump and taking him to court because of his immigration ban.
Honestly, all the actors that I just listed barely scratch the surface of the number of celebrities that slammed Trump during the show. Honorable mentions of others who used their platform to speak out go to David Harbour of Stranger Things, Taraji P. Henson, Emma Stone, the list goes on and on. I seriously can’t even count all of the ones who spoke out on both of my hands!
