Demi Lovato wears dreadlocks in her video for her newest single, “No Promises”, and fans on social media are not happy about it...
Demi teamed up with music trio Cheat Codes on a new song and video, but unfortunately it’s not the music everyone’s talking about…
Right after Demi dropped “No Promises” with electronic DJ group Cheat Codes, fans on social media were quick to notice that Demi’s wearing locs in the video. Many expressed their disapproval of Demi’s choice of hairstyle, calling it out for being yet another case of cultural appropriation by a celebrity.
One fan wrote QUOTE, “Demi has dreads in this music video SO CONFLICTED RIGHT NOW”, while another said QUOTE, “demi really has on dreads….baby, what you doing?????”
Of course, Demi isn’t the first celeb to be called out for cultural appropriation. In recent years, many celebs and brands have been accused of appropriating a style that has social significance to a particular culture, with the goal of turning it into the latest fashion trend. And when those celebs and brands don’t give due credit or respect to the culture they’ve taken from, fans are quick to react on the internet and point out the ignorance.
All that being said, while some fans have called out Demi’s locs in the “No Promises” video, others have taken to twitter to insist that she isn’t wearing dreadlocks at all. One such fan even posted a side-by-side picture of Demi’s hairstyle next to a woman wearing real dreadlocks, pointing out a subtle yet significant difference in texture.
While Demi is yet to comment on the dreadlock backlash, the majority of her fans are flooding her feed with high praises for the song and video--so only time will tell if this is something Demi will be made aware of and address.
