Halsey got real candid about bisexuality in a recent interview and Demi Lovato is feeling some type of way about her peer’s comments.
Today’s episode of News Feed is brought to you by Pandora Premium, where you can search and play your favorite songs. Pandora: sounds like you.
Those are some fighting words, Demi.
Before we get into Demi’s subtweet, let’s talk about Halsey’s interview with Paper magazine. The singer got real candid about how she felt about bisexuality and how it’s exploited in the music industry.
The interviewer led the conversation when they made a comment about the closest thing to queer representation in pop songs are sung by straight women. Then Halsey, who is bisexual herself, agreed with the comment and went on to say QUOTE, “Oh, yeah. Bisexuality as taboo. ‘Don’t tell your mom’ or ‘We shouldn’t do this’ or ‘This feels so wrong but it’s so right.’ That narrative is so f**king damaging to bisexuality and its place in society.”
Many fans immediately started to assume that the ‘Don’t tell your mom’ line was a reference to Demi’s ‘Cool for the Summer’ hit and when Demi caught wind of the comment, she tweeted out, “You know a song is a hit when people are still talking about the lyrics two years later. #shh-don’t-tell-your-mother”
I don’t know about you, but quite a few people pointed out that Demi completely missed Halsey’s point.
One user responded to Demi’s words and wrote QUOTE, “Or you could reflect on what Halsey was saying and use this as a chance to recognize the fault in those lyrics? You get off on drama tho.”
While another said, “Demi this is not the way to deal with things?? The song does kinda imply that two women having an “affair” is something to be ashamed of. Please be careful with your words. Yes, the song was a hit and yet I know you didn’t mean it like that, but a bisexual woman has every right to call out bi fetishization and you don’t get to invalidate her.”
Regardless of all the backlash Demi has been getting because of her words, Halsey has yet to respond to Demi’s subtweet.
