Our girl Demi Lovato is not one to shy away from publicly speaking about tough issues in her life and society in general. In the past she’s opened up about her struggles with mental health, eating disorders and more, but she’s using her story to help others. In a recent interview with Elvis Duran on the new iHeartRadio’s Label Defiers with ZICO Coconut Water, Duran has a deeper conversation with some of your favorite artists and talks about the labels that people attach to them. When asked about labels that people attach to her that she wishes should could shed, Demi says, "I think when people refer to me as being bipolar, it's something that is true—I am bipolar—but I don't like people to use it as a label. It's something that I have, it's not who I am."
In the interview, Demi speaks on her activism and philanthropic work because although, she’s an extremely talented singer, she’s also aware of how she can change the world with her platform saying , “I think it's important to speak up about the things that you believe in because your voice will be heard no matter what position you're in. And I just happen to be in a position where more people will hear my voice than they would have 10, 15 years ago. I use my voice to do more than just sing and I use it to speak up about mental health because that's something I'm very passionate about."
She also speaks about the recent death of Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and offers her condolences to his friends and family, but hopes that this opens up the conversation and helps somebody.
It’s hard not to love Demi when she is so open and honest with us about everything and when she continues to put out hits like ‘Sorry Not Sorry’ which is climbing the charts and is on repeat on my Spotify. We’ll get to see way more of Demi when her ‘Simply Complicated’ docuseries premieres, but we’re also anxiously awaiting her album which she confirms will be out later this year.
Soooo, what do you think? Are you happy that Demi spoke out about not letting labels define us?
