Taylor covered September and let’s just say reactions are mixed.
Taylor’s improved relationship with Spotify has brought us many gifts like her songs back onto the platform and some and an exclusive release of the Delicate video and acoustic version of the song. It also brought forth other songs that have not be as well received such as an acoustic cover of the the 70s band Earth Wind and Fire’s September.
Both the Delicate and September covers were recorded at the Tracking Room in the Nashville where she did a surprise gig at the Bluebird Cafe which diehard Swifties might know as the place she was discovered more than 10 years ago.
Twitter obviously reacted immediately to the release with many many people bashing the cover of the original, largely heralded as a soul and funk classic.
One user, Ray tweeted QUOTE “No one who respects Earth Wind and Fire or funk music would ever cover a song like that with banjoes. No one who loves that song would take a classic and make is sound like unseasoned chicken.”
Another user posted the simple, “I dont even think they play this in hell.” And another came back with the incredibly visceral “I’d rather stick a screwdriver in my ear and keep pushing until it pierces my soul.”
Even fans had issues with it, with one posting QUOTE “I am a famously unapologetic lover of Taylor Swift but her cover of September by Earth Wind and Fire has actually upset me “.
Of course, the reaction wasn’t a monolith and some people did actually like the cover, with one fan posting QUOTE “Wow @taylorswift13‘s cover of September, suddenly i am frolicking in a field of sunflowers in a pale blue dress with my non existent boyfriend, he lifts me up & we twirl in the sunflowers & probably get an allergic reaction but we don’t care because there never was a cloudy day.”
Another adoringly posted, QUOTE Excuse me everyone, @taylorswift13's cover of September makes me wish I was in love?? Or like ever ever in love? How does she do this?? “
Let’s not let this one cover become all consuming, Taylor still has other music coming out like the song she co-wrote with Pat Monahan for Sugarland. It’s called Babe and even features Taylor as a before, and will be released on Bigger, Sugarland’s first new studio album since 2010.
Well, we know the reviews are mixed so what you do you think of Taylor’s September cover? Is this your September Song or do you want someone to wake you when September ends?
