Jay-Z’s highly anticipated album 4:44 dropped last night on he spills all the tea from admitting he cheated on Beyonce to addressing that infamous elevator fight.
Fans have been waiting patiently for a Jay-Z response ever since Beyonce released Lemonade and although 4:44 is not technically a response album, Jay definitely addresses some of our biggest questions.
On Jay-Z’s newly released album, 4:44 he opens up for the first time about the cheating allegations touched upon on Lemonade including Becky with the good hair, as well as the twins, and apologizes for taking Beyonce’s innocence. The title track, 4:44 is in the middle of the album and is chock full of vulnerability. Jay addresses the cheating rumors saying QUOTE - "And if my children knew / I don't even know what I would do / If they ain't look at me the same / I would probably die with all the shame. 'You did what with who?' / What good is a ménage à trois when you have a soulmate? / 'You risked that for Blue?'" Jay also apologizes for marrying Beyonce before he was ready to fully commit and also apologizes for not being there for her during her leading up to the miscarriage.
He goes on to say QUOTE - "Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles / Took me too long for this song." Beyonce formerly told the world in her HBO documentary Life is But a Dream that she suffered a miscarriage before Blue Ivy was born, but this is the first time we are learning that she suffered multiple. In an interview with iHeartRadio, Jay addresses the loaded title track saying QUOTE - "'4:44' is a song that I wrote, and it’s the crux of the album, just right in the middle of the album. And I woke up, literally, at 4:44 in the morning, 4:44 AM, to write this song. So it became the title of the album and everything. It's the title track because it's such a powerful song, and I just believe one of the best songs I’ve ever written."
In the track titled, “Kill Jay-Z” Jay references the infamous elevator fight with Solange at the Met Gala saying QUOTE - "You egged Solange on / Knowin' all along /All you had to say you was wrong. But you gotta do better, boy, you owe it to Blue / You had no father, you had the armor / But you got a daughter, gotta get softer. You almost went Eric Benét / Let the baddest girl in the world get away.” To give you some context of the reference, Eric Bennet cheated on Halle Berry before they split in 2003. However in his interview with iHeartRadio, Jay advices fans not to take the track literally saying QUOTE - "It's really about the ego. It's about killing off the ego, so we can have this conversation in a place of vulnerability and honesty." Adding even more tea to the kettle is the fact that Jay not only addresses his elevator drama, he also talks about his issues with Kanye. Jay raps QUOTE - "I know people backstab you, I feel bad too / But this 'f--k everybody' attitude ain't natural / But you ain't the same, this ain't KumbaYe / But you got hurt because you did cool by 'Ye / You gave him 20 million without blinkin' / He gave you 20 minutes on stage, f-- was he thinkin'?/ 'F--kin' wrong with everybody?' is what you sayin' / But if everybody's crazy, you're the one that's insane." Twitter than made up a rumor that Jay initially included lyrics dissing Kim Kardashian, but it has been confirmed that the rumor is not true.
In the track titled Family Feud, Beyonce makes an appearance with some background vocals while Jay sings her praises saying QUOTE - “Super Bowl goals. My wife in the crib feedin’ the kids liquid gold. We in a whole different mode.” He also references Becky with the good hair from Lemonade saying QUOTE - “Yeah, I’ll fuck up a good thing if you let me. Let me alone, Becky. A man that don’t take care his family can’t be rich.” Beyonce and Jay-Z are known for being private, but between Lemonade and 4:44 it’s clear that they choose to save it all for the music.
