Katy Perry opened up the 2017 MTV VMAs with a bunch of jokes, but some viewers just weren’t having it.
Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, and Lil Uzi Vert may have gotten the party started at the VMAs, but it sounds like it all came to a complete stop once Katy floated onto the stage to do her opening monologue. Katy kicked off her opening by making small talk with the audience and asking about the state of the world since, you know, she just got back from space and all.
Katy went on to make a joke about the world, Handmaid’s Tale, fidget spinners, all while dropping an f-bomb in between. After everything was all said and done, Katy ended her monologue by saying that music is here to unite us all.
Even though Katy’s monologue ended on a pretty positive note, the rest of her opening just didn’t sit well with the audience at all. One person tweeted, “what are the two least funny things you can think of?” complete with a screenshot of Katy holding up an Handmaid’s Tale-esque outfit.
While another tweeted, “Katy Perry is like what you all THOUGHT Anne Hathaway was, but for real.” Ouch. And another user used a screenshot of Jack Antonoff eating a banana to basically describe how they felt during Katy’s opening.
