Kim K slammed for cultural appropriation at the MTV Movie and TV Awards...
And this isn’t the first time Kim’s been called out for this.
Kim’s look for this year’s MTV Movie and TV Awards over the weekend has sparked some major backlash from social media. The reality queen showed up to the awards show wearing her hair in long braids, which some fans immediately took to Twitter to call out as cultural appropriation.
One person wrote QUOTE, “it’s not cute to appropriate my culture. your privilege is really showing.”
While another commented QUOTE, “funny how my japanese mother learned how to do box braids and micros on my hair and my sister’s hair and she never had the audacity to put those hairstyles on herself because she knew damn well. Maybe non-black moms to black kids such as Kim Kardashian should take notes.”
And this isn’t the first time Kim has done the braids look. Back in January, she posted a video of herself wearing platinum blonde braids accessorized with beads at the end, and she tells fans in the vid QUOTE, “So guys, I did Bo Derek braids, and I’m really into it.”
Bo Derek was a white actress who famously appropriated the braids in the 70s, but she obviously didn’t invent the style and should fans pointed out that she should NOT be credited with the style by Kim or anyone else.
One fan slammed Kim’s “Bo Derek” comment at the time, writing in part QUOTE, “Kim Kardashian got on Fulani braids and called them “Bo Derek” braids...how many times is that family gonna get dragged for them to stop appropriating other people’s culture. This why Beyonce don’t like her stiff lips a**.”
Despite all the backlash back in January and over the weekend at the MTV awards show, Kim hasn’t shown any sign of responding or apologizing for appropriating the African hairstyle. She took to Father’s Day on Sunday to share a post in honor of her late father, Robert Kardashian, and hubby Kanye.
So maybe one of Kim’s famous friends will have to explain to her to her face why the cultural appropriation is upsetting to so many of her fans, because clearly social media isn’t getting through to her.
