Miley Cyrus is no stranger to being called out for cultural appropriation, and a new Instagram pic has created an upset with fans once again...
Miley posted a picture of herself wearing a rainbow-colored bindi to celebrate Pride, accompanied by the caption QUOTE, “Celebrating #Pride w @hot995 in D.C. #AmericaLovesPride”. While her sentiment was in the right place, her choice of wearing a bindi to show off her pride was not met with enthusiasm.
One commenter wrote QUOTE, “Still stealing other people’s culture I guess :/", while another posted QUOTE, “This looks like Indian pride”.
Bindis carry cultural and spiritual significance in Indian culture, and while Miley is not the first to unfortunately appropriate the look, fans are disappointed that she hasn’t learned from her past mistakes, as she’s previously been criticized for appropriating black culture in her music and videos during her “Wrecking Ball” days.
While Miley is clearly still in need of some educating on the matter of cultural appropriation, Katy Perry is finally admitting to her wrongdoings when it comes from borrowing from other cultures as an entertainer. In a new interview with Deray McKesson, Katy called out both her music video for "This Is How We Do," in which she wears braids and eats watermelon, and her 2013 American Music Awards performance, in which she dressed as a geisha.
She admitted that she didn't realize she was hurting people through cultural appropriation until after it was pointed out to her, saying QUOTE, “...I won't ever understand some of those things because of who I am. I will never understand, but I can educate myself, and that's what I'm trying to do along the way...I didn't know that I did it wrong until I heard people saying I did it wrong. And, sometimes that's what it takes. It takes someone to say, out of compassion and out of love, 'Hey, this is what the origin is.’" Some fans have commented that Katy’s apology comes a little too late, while others are praising her for coming out and admitting to her past mistakes and attempting to learn from them.
