Kim Kardashian is getting slammed yet again for cultural appropriation after posting a snap of her new hairdo.
The memos keep being sent to Kim, but she doesn’t seem to be getting them.
Over the weekend, Kim Kardashian posted a video to snapchat showing herself in cornrows. Now, the appropriation of cornrows by white people is already a contentious issue, but Kim took it a step further by calling them “Bo Derek” braids. Now, for those of you who don’t know, Bo Derek is a white actress, who in the 1979 comedy 10, ran down the beach in cornrows. She’s often credited with popularizing the hairstyle, which has actually been around since 500 BCE and originated in Africa. Yes, cornrows are a traditional African hairstyle that was re-established in the new world as an act of resistance after heads were shaved in the Middle Passage. It was a covert way for black slaves to fight against the psychological impact of being stripped of one’s culture and humanity. So, ignoring the historical importance of the hairstyle to Black culture just isn’t cool. But that’s exactly what Kim K did in the snapchat vid - by attributing the hairstyle to a white actress in a movie, she totally erased their actual origins.
Fans obviously took note of her misappropriation and called her out on social media. @t.kaliyah, an instrgram user, commented on the photo QUOTE “What angers me is the fact that she called them Bo Derrick braids as if that’s where they originated. If you gone try to rock African cornrows ATLEAST have enough respect to call them WHAT THEY ARE."”
A twitter user posted QUOTE “Kim Kardashian should have learned by now how to properly deal with black culture and considering she has three black kids this behaviour is disturbing.” Another instragram user called kim a “culture vulture”.
Kim hasn’t responded to the backlash, and it’s doubtful she actually will. She’s already once sported this look while crediting it to Bo Derek, and that was back in 2013!
So it doesn’t look like she’s agreeing with her naysayers. Well, what do you think? Will Kim apologize for the appropriation or can we expect her to just ignore it?
