Rita Ora is back with new music and instead of being met with excitement and praise, the song is receiving a massive amount of criticism and scrutiny for how it depicts bisexuality.
The new song, called “Girls”, features Cardi B, Charli XCX and Bebe Rexha and has lyrics like QUOTE “Red wine, I just wanna kiss girls, girls, girls” and QUOTE “I ain't one-sided, I'm open-minded, I'm fifty-fifty and I'm never gonna hide it.”
While many people saw that this was Rita’s way of coming out as bisexual herself, other identifying LGBTQ+ musicians saw the song as harmful to the community and reminded them of the days when they hadn’t come out yet and were afraid to.
Among those who have called out Rita for her choice of lyrics is Kehlani and Hayley Kiyoko. Although Rita stayed silent on the subject over the weekend, she posted a note on Twitter addressing the backlash and got some unexpected support.
In her letter, Rita said QUOTE “I have had romantic relationships with women and men throughout my life” and that she QUOTE “would never intentionally cause harm to other LGBTQ+ people or anyone.”
Shortly after she posted the note, Rob Kardashian re-tweeted it and added in six praise hand emojis.
At first we thought it was strange that Rob interjected himself into the conversation, but then we remembered that the two dated way back in the day in 2012 for about two months.
They had a pretty messy breakup when Rob accused Rita of cheating on him with multiple men, but it appears as if they have put the past behind them. Fans began to question if they were talking again so we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on these two!
What do you think about Rob supporting his ex and does Rita deserve the backlash over the song? Let us know in the comments below and then click here to see what Hayley Kiyoko thinks of the tune. I’m Zoe Lillian, thanks for tuning in.
