Lady Gaga ADMITS to feeling “ugly”, “lonely”, and “insecure”, and recalls having a breakdown on the set of ‘A Star is Born’.
If you wanted to see this movie before, just WAIT until you hear this interview.
Lady Gaga recently opened up to the Los Angeles Times to talk about her upcoming film, ‘A Star is Born’, co-starring and directed by Bradley Cooper. The singer talked about everything from her unconventional audition process, to the time she actually had a breakdown while shooting the movie.
In ‘A Star is Born’, Gaga plays Ally, an aspiring singer/songwriter, while Bradley plays Jackson, a successful rock star battling alcohol and drug addiction. One night, Jackson sees Ally perform, and the pair share and instant chemistry and begin a relationship with each other. Jackson brings Ally on tour, and as her star begins to rise, Jackson’s starts to fall.
CLIP/AUDIO: (0:43-1:07)
As you can see from just a few seconds from the trailer, there is a crazy amount of undeniable chemistry between the pair. But what really shocked us was seeing how completely different Lady Gaga looks in the film, styled with brown hair and little-to-no makeup in most of her scenes.
And according to Gaga, that’s exactly how she had to audition, too. She explained that Warner Bros. insisted that she do a screen test for the role, and when Bradley Cooper came over to her house to shoot it, he whipped out a makeup wipe and took off her ALL makeup right on the spot! She said of the moment QUOTE, “It put me right in the place I needed to be, because when my character talks about how ugly she feels — that was real...I’m so insecure. I like to preach, but I don’t always practice what I preach.”
And that wasn’t the only thing Gaga got candid about. She also admitted to having a breakdown after Bradley threw her off her game by saying a line that wasn’t in the script in an attempt to loosen her up. Rather than improvise along with her co-star, Gaga repeated her scripted lines over and over again. She recalled QUOTE, “Finally, he said, ‘Are you OK?’ And then I started crying. Then I got that out of the way and then we did the scene. I had to let go of the words.”
In Lady Gaga’s defense, starting off your first leading role in a film with your director-SLASH-co-star throwing improv at you first thing would catch ANYONE off guard.
When asked how she related to her character in the film, Gaga admitted she related to BOTH characters, explaining QUOTE, “It's very lonely being a performer. There's a certain loneliness that I feel, anyway—that I'm the only one that does what I do. So, it feels like no one understands. And the urge to use is because you're searching for a way to quell the pain...When I first started to perform around the country doing nightclubs, there was stuff everywhere, but I had already partied when I was younger, so I didn't dabble. I was able to avoid it because I did it when I was a kid.”
After sharing her insecurities and struggles with loneliness, Gaga also revealed what makes her feel beautiful, and her little monsters will be thrilled with this answer. She said QUOTE, “To be honest, I think what makes me feel beautiful is when I see happiness in my fans. When I see or hear from them that the music that I've made has changed their life in some way, that's what makes me feel beautiful. Because this is just the outside, you know? And at the end of the day, I could be in a million movies and put out a million songs and everyone could say, 'She was so beautiful,' but that's not really what I want. I want them to say, 'I saw that movie and I cried my eyes out and I learned something about myself.'”
Well we’ve only seen the trailer so far but we can already tell that that is EXACTLY what we’ll be saying about ‘A Star is Born’.
