Along the sandy beaches of Similajau National Park, lies a crumpled plastic bottle lay on the calm beachside of the park. One of the 250 volunteers of BEACON Project’s Beach Cleaning activity, picked up the bottle and placed it inside a black rubbish bag. It was one of the many rubbish strewn along the beaches of the national park.
At the end of the activity, the total weight of the rubbish collected were amounted to an astonishing weight of 450 kilograms. The volunteers made it a mission to clean up the beach despite gathering as early as 6.45am at the national park.
The beach cleaning activity, held to coincide with the closing ceremony of Friends of Nature 2017, where 39 students from 6 six schools in Bintulu took part in three days of learning and exploring the flora and fauna in Similajau National Park. The students undergone a series of activities such as bird watching and nature walk with their foster parents from MLNG, under the guidance of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).
