First Adele, now Sam Smith?! Our hearts and tear ducts were not equipped to handle what’s about to go down as the saddest Sam Smith song yet, so prepare for the water works.
Sam first debuted “Drowning Shadows” just yesterday on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show, which is the first new material, aside from 007 theme song, “Writing’s On The Wall”, since his 2014 record In The Lonely Hour. He talked about the song being the saddest and least radio-friendly song he’s ever written, saying, “I wanted to leave people on this artistic little song and this moment. This is proper… really dark. Brace yourself…. It’s a sad one. But I’m very proud of this song. It’s insanely personal to me.” You heard the dude, BRACE YOURSELVES guys:
Sam also revealed that the track is about him getting into a taxi after a night out and coming to a crossroads. He said QUOTE, “One would lead to gay clubs and one would go home. I was in such a lonely sad place, I’d have to decide whether to stay out or go home.”
The song will be part of Sam’s In The Lonely Hour: Drowning Shadows Edition and he also shared that QUOTE, “This is a present directly from me to my fans,” in which he called it his “final bow before my second album.”
However, after Sam’s career skyrocketed about three years ago, he’s now looking forward to a break to just be a normal 23-year-old. He talked about plans for the break, saying, “I’m sad, but it also feels right… It feels right for me to just go home and just live my life and be a 23-year-old. My love life, the downs and ups, it never stops, so I’m always inspired by stuff like that, but it’d be good to spend some time dating.”
And speaking of Sam’s dating life, which we all thought we knew plenty about considering his emotional rollercoaster lyrics to his songs, he recently revealed to E! News that he’s NEVER actually had a boyfriend…
So it looks like time will only tell if Sam’s break from music will lead him to love, but for now I want to hear all your thoughts on his new song so get the conversation going right down here in the comments section below, and after that, you can click right over here to check out a few of Hollywood’s HOTTEST abs on Debatable.
