Sam kicked off the Oscars with the first performance of the night and it was nothing short of perfection.
After a few awards were handed out and a somewhat long speech from Sarah Silverman, Sam Smith FINALLY made his way on stage to perform the first song of the night. The singer sang “Writing’s On the Wall,” the theme song to the latest James Bond movie, with a ton of beautiful images projected on the giant screen behind him, and he sounded incredible. Take a look.
With a voice like that, Sam did NOT need any background dancers to back him up. Later on in the night, “Writing’s On the Wall,” was announced as the winner in the Best Original song category. The song was up against Lady Gaga’s “Till It Happens to You,” The Weeknd’s “Earned It,” “Simple Song #3” by David Lang, and Manta Ray by Antony Hegarty and J. Ralph.
Sam and his cowriter Jimmy Napes both accepted the award together and while giving his acceptance speech, Sam announced that he was dedicated his award to the LGBT community and ended the speech by saying…
