It wouldn’t be a true Sam Smith comeback if his first single didn’t hit you where hit hurts, make you feel things you never thought possible, and cause an intense spiritual awakening by the sound of his effortless vocals, and if that’s exactly how his new single “Too Good at Goodbyes” made you feel, then his job here is done. But if you haven’t gotten the chance to revel in all its emotion, now is your chance:
Although this single isn’t exactly what you’d listen to on a bright sunny day as you’re driving in the car with friends, Sam did admit that he’s ready for something more positive than what he’s used to. He also talked about the meaning of “Too Good at Goodbyes” and what it represents to him.
But just because his first single is a direct representation of his life doesn’t mean that his album will be entirely biographical. Sam revealed that during his time off, he’s practiced being present in his family’s lives and even admitted that this album is actually not about him. He said QUOTE, “There’s about four songs that are about me and the rest are about different things and different people in my life and what they’ve gone through. Different in my opinions on different things. I wanted to welcome people back in and I want it to be about my voice and about the storytelling of something that I’ve gone through.”
Sam also said that his hiatus had to do with his fame and what happens when you become well-known, which really scared him. What helped him write the album from different peoples’ perspectives and stories was staying grounded. He said QUOTE, “For it to not be about me for one year was absolutely wonderful. I was there to see my god daughter be born, I’ve been at every single birthday for my mom and my dad, sister and my cousins, my best friends. I’m there for down days & their good days. My sister’s graduation, I was there for both of them. It was incredible.”
But if you’re wondering what the difference between his forthcoming album, and his previous album In The Lonely Hour is, he summed it up pretty perfectly:
Sam is set to release his new album before Christmas and will drop two different versions. He’ll also be promoting his sophomore album with a series of intimate shows in LA, New York, London and Berlin starting next week, so GET EXCITED and also probably get the tissues ready… you know, just as an extra precaution.
But right now I want to know all your thoughts on Sam’s new single once you’re done wiping those tears away, so get to talking down here in the comments, and after that, be sure to click right over here to check out more new music from Zayn and Sia. Thanks for hanging out with me here on Clevver News, I’m your host Ava Gordy and I’ll see you next time.
