Everyone knows that the Met Gala is like A List Celebrity prom. If you walk the Met Gala carpet, it pretty much confirms that you have arrived. This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Now as much as we love to see how the celebs interpret the theme every year, we also anxiously await for couples to make their red carpet debut. Shawn Mendes and Hailey Baldwin have been rumored to be dating for months now, but back in April, Shawn posted a photo of him and Hailey with no explanation and the internet lost all chill. Many people took this as Shawn “confirming” his romance with Hailey, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, the Canadian crooner posting the photo would cause a media whirlwind, which is exactly why he decided to do it.
When asked about the photo, He told NRJ radio in Norway. “We’re really good friends. Hailey said she wished she could post the photo without the Internet exploding. Then I said, ‘You know what, I’m just gonna do it!'” Of course people are always jumping to conclusions when two friends are spotted together.
Anyway, fast forward to last night! The two were seen leaving the hotel where they got ready and then headed to the Gala where they made their debut. Shawn and Hailey both walked the carpet in Tommy Hilfiger and they definitely made a statement…but even though the obvious choice would be to assume they confirmed their relationship, we may need to pump the brakes. So of course everyone freaked out on Twitter when they appeared together and multiple outlets took this as confirmation. I mean this is the carpet where you announce. Remember back in 2016, Zayn and Gigi made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala and back in 2017 Selena and The Weeknd made their debut at the Met Gala. So it’s not really far fetched to think that this is the confirmation that some fans have been waiting for. Well Shawn Mendes has shut the rumors down AGAIN this morning! In an interview with W Magazine, he shares how he feels going to his first Met Gala saying “I feel like I’ve been invited to attend somebody else’s gig, so I just want to be respectful and be there for what it is," Mendes said, sitting in his hotel room wearing a Tommy Hilfiger suit as he prepared for the most fashionable red carpet in the world. "If I’m playing an award show or announcing anything, I have nerves, but here I kind of feel like, just be grateful you’re here, be happy you're here, and just go have fun. You know?" When asked about his relationship with Hailey, he insists, "We’re really good friends. It’s funny; she’s such a pro with this type of stuff... I want it to be amazing for her so I’ve been trying for the past 24 hours to be really silly so that she stays on. I’m happy to walk with her, she’s amazing." Ok he didn’t really deny it and the rumors are pretty much shut down because this is confirmation guys. I mean, you SHOULD be really good friends with someone you’re dating. Must admit that they did look really great together and Shawn even fixed her gown at one point so she didn’t trip and so that she looked great in all her photos. After the gala the two were spotted heading to the afterparty in a party bus where they were hanging with Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Ruby Rose who posted video of Hailey and Shawn singing along to Maren Morris’ “The Middle” and Childish Gambino’s “This Is America”!
