We’ve got new deets on how The Originals spinoff Legacies is going to different from anything we’ve seen so far.
We’ll also fill you in on why fans are NOT too thrilled with this new spinoff.
As many of you know, The Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals ended after five seasons last week with an emotional series finale. Fans now have a brand new spinoff to obsess over. Legacies will debut this fall on The CW featuring Hope Mikaelson, Klaus’ daughter. The show will follow Hope’s time in Mystic Falls at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. But the town may not be ready for what’s in store. Showrunner Julie Plec told the audience at the TCA Summer Press Tour that unlike the other shows, Legacies will feature a “monster of the week” format. Julie elaborated saying quote, “Overall, we will have a big bad that we slowly hint at. We’re embracing a monster of the week, hence all the monster effects, which I haven’t done before.” Danielle Rose Russell who plays Hope was optimistic about this change saying, “It’s what’s going to make our show so different and so good.”
But CW fans aren’t sure they are on board with this new spinoff. For starters, fans are unhappy that two main characters died in The Orginals finale and most familiar faces from The Originals won’t be featured in Legacies. Matt Davis who plays Alaric and Aria Shahghasemi who plays Landon will be the only two returning. At the TCA’s CW President Mark Pedowitz explained this decision saying quote, “We were supportive of bringing some of the people back to the degree Julie feels is necessary. With any spinoff, you have to stand on your own two feet.”
Another unsettling topic is all the Harry Potter references. Showrunner Julie Plec has teased that lots of HP jokes are coming our way on Legacies. And fans aren’t how they feel about Matt Davis playing a “Hot Dumbledore” role.
Fans are also less than excited that Legacies seemed to take the spot of the proposed Supernatural spinoff, Wayward Sisters. Mark revealed that there were only a certain number of slots for new shows this fall and that’s why The CW didn’t pick up Wayward Sisters. Fans took that to mean that Legacies took its spot.
The good news is that you’ll be able to decide whether love or hate Legacies very soon! The spinoff debuts on The CW October 25th just in time for Halloween.
