Tonight’s iHeart radio awards kicked things off by giving the award for Best Collab to the Chainsmokers and Coldplay for their hit, “Something Just Like This”. Although Coldplay were not in attendance to collect the award alongside the Chainsmokers duo, the guys gave a big shout out to their collab partners and thanked Chris Martin and crew for inspiring them in more ways than one.
The Chainsmokers also won Best Dance Artist of the Year at the show.
Another big winner of the night was Ed Sheeran, who won Song of the Year for “Shape of You” and Best Male artist. Unfortunately Ed wasn’t able to attend the show in person, but he did give a live acceptance speech from Melbourne, Australia, which he immediately followed up with a performance of his latest hit, “Perfect”.
Even though Ed couldn’t be at the show, we’re so glad he made the effort to thank his fans in this unconventional way. Speaking of which, his pal Taylor Swift also had to give her acceptance speech via video since she’s busy rehearsing for her upcoming Reputation tour. Taylor won the iHeart Female Artist of the Year award, and as a gesture of thanks to her fans, she premiered her video for “Delicate” right after her pre-recorded speech.
Cardi B also won big at the show tonight, taking home the award for Best New Artist AND Best New Hip Hop Artist. She was up against Niall Horan and Khalid among others, but don’t feel too bad for those guys, because Niall took home the Best New Pop Artist award, while Khalid won Best New R&B Artist.
In other notable categories, Kendrick Lamar was given the Best Rap Artist of the Year award, meanwhile Bruno Mars won Best R&B Artist of the Year, and Maroon 5 won Best Group.
DJ Khaled, who co-hosted the show with Hailee Baldwin, took home an iHeart trophy for Hip Hop Song of the Year thanks to his smash hit, “Wild Thoughts”. And during his acceptance speech he made sure to give huge shout outs to Rihanna, Bryson Tiller, and of course, his adorable son, Asahd.
Beauty brand L’Oreal also presented a “Fangirls” award at the show, which went to the always amazing Camila Cabello.
That girl deserves every good thing that comes her way, and we can’t wait to see her tour with Taylor Swift for “Reputation”...talk about one hell of an opening act.
iHeart also gave out awards for fan-voted categories, and some honorable mentions from those include Niall Horan winning Best Lyrics for “Sow Hands”, Louis Tomlinson winning Best Solo Breakout, and Harry Styles winning Best Music Video for “Sign of the Times.” Is it me or do the fans always seem to vote in ONE DIRECTION when it comes to award shows? Sorry guys, I just had to do it.
