A lot of hashtag-worthy moments from this year’s Golden Globes came from the hilarious host himself, Ricky Gervais. From making digs at Jennifer Lawrence’s salary, to getting a little too TMI with Mel Gibson, he made our jaws drop more than a few times throughout the awards show.
Ricky’s first couple jabs came straight from his opening monologue, commenting on how while Caitlyn Jenner has broken down stereotypes for the transgender community, she hasn’t done much for women drivers. He also talked about Jennifer Lawrence’s plea for equal pay, joking, “There were marches on the street with nurses and factory workers saying, how the hell can a 25-year-old live on 52 million?”
Luckily for Ricky there were plenty of presenters for him to introduce, which meant lots of opportunities to make fun of the biggest names in Hollywood. He hinted at the scandal behind Ben Affleck’s recent split with Jennifer Garner when introducing Matt Damon, saying QUOTE, "Here’s the only person who Ben Affleck was faithful to, Matt Damon.” Along with the bromance joke he got some huge laughs when introducing America Ferrera and Eva Longoria, describing them as QUOTE, "Not only two talented people, they are two people that Donald Trump can't wait to deport."
Out of the entire night, however, Ricky’s most shocking joke came while introducing Mel Gibson, when he said, “I'd rather have a drink with him in his hotel tonight than Bill Cosby." The comment made for a literal show-stopping moment, but Gibson quickly quipped back with, “I love seeing Ricky every three years because it reminds me to get a colonoscopy”. As they say, all’s fair in comedy and awards shows. Okay maybe that’s not what “they” say, but it’s clearly what Ricky says.
